LA GRANDE
Join us for an unforgettable evening honoring 🇩🇴 Dominican cultural heritage with a special screening of La Grande, an inspiring film about the life and legacy of music icon Fefita La Grande, also known as La Mayimba (Manuela Josefa Cabrera Taveras). This special screening is part of a three-city New Jersey tour celebrating vibrant Dominican communities across the state.
ABOUT THE FILM
La Grande offers an intimate look at the extraordinary journey of Fefita La Grande — the first woman to break into the male-dominated world of merengue tĂpico. Known for her bold style, fierce independence, and unmatched accordion mastery, Fefita redefined what it means to be a woman in music.
The film captures her rhythm, resilience, and revolutionary spirit, cementing her place as a cultural icon and trailblazer for generations to come.
The New Brunswick Performing Arts Center will host the flagship screening of La Grande, the only location to feature an exclusive post-film talkback with the producer Antonio Rubio. This conversation will explore:
Fefita’s cultural impact and enduring legacy
The role of women in shaping Latin music
The importance of bringing more Latin films to wider theatrical audiences
By attending, you’ll be part of a movement to elevate NJ Dominican voices, preserve cultural heritage, and advocate for greater representation in the arts.
